'It Died With an Awful Sound'
Oh, yeah. Now things are getting serious at guitar class -- Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water." It turns out to be very simple but if I can get proficient with just the intro, I will consider myself a Monster of Heavy Metal. You probably didn't know this but the song has "a crunching four-note 'blues-scale' melody harmonized in parallel fourths." Gotta love those parallel fourths. Just think, if those fourths were even just a teensy bit off parallel, classic rock radio would have turned out entirely different.
I knew the song was about a place in Switzerland burning down while Deep Purple was playing and this Wikipedia entry has the whole story. The lyrics are pretty dopey but with a guitar and bass like that, who needs lyrics.
