F Chord, Indeed
I think I have already met my match and it is called an F chord. Mark the guitar coach was showing me how to do the intro to "House of the Rising Sun" and all was going well at first. You start with an A minor chord, which is easy, and next comes C major, which is just an easy finger change away from the A minor. The D major follows and there's nothing too terribly difficult about that, either. But next is the F, a tricky bit of sadistic finger contortion that must have been dreamed up by the Marquis Les Paul de Sade. It's a barre chord, meaning you have to use one finger to press down on more than one string. I have to fret the first two strings with my index finger, which is hard enough, but when I try to position the other fingers in their proper fret, I can't get good pressure on the barre.
I Googled the F chord and all the entries for it start off with words to the effect of "this chord can be a little difficult for a beginner" and "we saved this for last because it can be hard to learn." How about, "Here's a chord guaranteed to make you stick that guitar in the corner and go watch TV for the rest of the night." I know what they call it the F chord, that's for sure.
